What is a Homestay?

If you are planning to visit New Delhi you have a number of accommodation options: hotel, hostel, guest house, holiday rental, inn, bed and breakfast (B&B) or, of course, a Homestay. But what is a homestay? In most forms of accommodation you normally arrive as a stranger and leave as a stranger. That doesn’t happen in a homestay such as Homestay29! You stay in a regular house with a living breathing real local family.

Of course staying with a host family varies from home to home but here are some features that you should expect in Homestay29:

  1. You will stay in a ‘real’ home not a place designed for tourists; you will be special.
  2. Expect a friendly welcome and with the host trying to make your stay a happy one.
  3. You will find a clean, tidy, safe and friendly environment.
  4. You will experience normal day to day life of people who live in India – seeing into another culture.
  5. You will be staying in a house in SDA, which is close to local markets, restaurants, fast-food places, IIT Delhi, JNU, Hauz Khas, Hauz Khas Village, and with good transport links such as the Metro. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is about 30 minutes away.

A Homestay is sometimes called by other names such as bed & breakfast (B&B) accommodation. There is a difference between a bed & breakfast (B&B), and Homestay. Bed & breakfast accommodations may or may not be Homestays.
A Homestay is not a hotel, guest house, inn, sarai etc.

A "homestay" is a cultural exchange in which a person visiting or temporarily staying in another country lives with a family in the host country. Homestays involve relationships between people and should not be confused with a boarding-house or hotel experience in which a person only rents a room. While guests pay their own expenses for room and board, the purpose of a homestay is not just to provide a place to stay but to create an enriching learning experience for both the guest and the host family. There are homestays for short periods (one night or a weekend) and for longer times (a vacation period, a term, several terms).

There are many benefits of a homestay. Guests are able to communicate effectively with native speakers in a natural setting. Second, living with a family provides a quiet atmosphere for study and a greater sense of security for some guests. Third, a homestay exposes guests to a rich variety of cultural learning opportunities, such as family activities, holiday celebrations, religious practices, sporting events, etc. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a homestay often results in guests developing deep, lasting friendships with their families. Such a personal connection gives many guests a real sense of stability in their lives here.

A Homestay combines the comfort and distinction of a boutique hotel with the personal hospitality, informality and local knowledge enjoyed when staying with family friends. A Homestay offers an insight into the culture, traditions, history and everyday life of an Indian family. What's more, guests get the chance to enjoy authentic Indian food at its very best - home cooked.

Homestays act as a base from which to explore the region, but simply staying in them is an experience leagues ahead of alternative accommodation on the tourist trail. It takes the detachment away from tourism, makes the guide book redundant and gives you a unique and unforgettable experience of the intricacies of Indian life and culture.

We, the hosts, pride ourselves on the individual attention we can give our guests, whether for comfort, food, or just an interesting chat. We have none of the aloof detachment typical to hotels, yet this doesn't mean that guests and family are living on top of each other. Guests are invited to feel at home and there really is no hospitality like Indian hospitality.

We have been serving the community since 2006. We offer quality and reliable services you can count on. In addition, we are always here to answer any questions you may have.

At Homestay29, the guest always comes first.
